Are organisations becoming too reliant on AI in cybersecurity?

Artificial intelligence is quickly becoming one of the most talked about technologies in cybersecurity. From identifying suspicious activity to scanning systems for vulnerabilities, AI can analyse vast amounts of data at speed and highlight patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed.

There’s not a security team in the world who isn’t dealing with a constant stream of alerts. This places security teams under enormous pressure. Considering the high – octane environments in which security teams must perform, it’s easy to see why the promises of AI appeals so much. Faster analysis, better visibility  and the ability to process bigger volumes of data quicker than any human team can – what’s not to love about these AI claims?

But rushing to adopt these tools at pace is a risk, and an important question is beginning to surface.

Are we becoming too reliant on AI to keep our systems secure?

There is no doubt AI has an important role to play in modern cybersecurity. However, when it starts to replace human judgement rather than support it, we begin leaving our organisations vulnerable to a new set of problems.

Why AI has become so attractive to security teams

The scale of today’s cyber threat landscape is enormous and is only getting bigger.

Every arm of every organisation is generating huge volumes of system activity daily. Security teams are expected to detect threats, investigate incidents and respond quickly and still keep the lines of business communication open all at the same time and often with limited resources.

It’s here that AI really can make a difference.

AI tools can sift through massive datasets, identify red flags of human behaviour and raise the alert for a potential risk in split seconds. Doing these tasks at volume would burn out a team of human analysts.

This makes it particularly useful in areas such as threat detection, network monitoring and vulnerability scanning. In many cases, AI allows organisations to spot suspicious activity far earlier than they might have in the past.

So, when it’s used well and within the right context, AI can significantly strengthen asecurity operation.

The limits of automation

Yet despite its capabilities, AI is not a silver bullet.

AI tools and systems work by identifying patterns in data. This is why they’re so effective when dealing with known threats or behaviours that follow a familiar pattern.

And it’s at this point that the limitations of AI become evident, because malicious actors do not stand still. They’re constantly adding to their playbook of techniques to bypass security controls.

One thing is for sure in cyber security – you always must expect the unexpected to stay ahead of attackers. But AI tools struggle to interpret what is happening when an attack does not resemble anything the training data has detected before.

This also heightens the risk of false positives. Security teams can end up investigating alerts that turn out to be harmless while more subtle threats remain hidden.

Cybersecurity requires judgement, context and the ability to interpret ambiguous signals. These are uniquely human qualities, and it’s the reason why human expertise still plays a critical role in cyber security.

The risk of overconfidence in AI

When organisations invest heavily in automated systems, there can be a tendency to assume the technology will take care of most threats on its own. Over time, teams may begin to rely on AI alerts without questioning them or may overlook areas where automated tools have limited visibility.

This can create blind spots.

Cyber attackers are quick to adapt. If they identify weaknesses in how an AI system operates, they will not hesitate to exploit them. Techniques such as data poisoning and adversarial attacks are specifically designed to manipulate AI models or confuse automated detection systems.

If your organisation is relying too heavily on AI tools to keep your data safe, these risks can easily go unnoticed.

Why human expertise still matters

Human analysts are often better at recognising unusual behaviour that does not fit a clear pattern. They can ask questions that automated systems cannot. It’s the human experts on the team who will connect the dots between technical alerts, user behaviour and wider organisational risk.

Very little in cybersecurity is clear cut. You need to maintain the ability to interpret context during complex incidents where the situation is not immediately clear in your organisation. AI tools alone will not provide this function.

A more balanced approach to AI

The most effective cybersecurity strategies do not rely solely on either humans or machines. Instead, they combine the strengths of both.

AI can handle large scale data analysis and highlight potential risks. Human analysts can interpret those signals, investigate anomalies and make informed decisions about how to respond.

As cyber threats continue to evolve, organisations will need both intelligent systems and skilled people to stay ahead. Technology can provide speed and scale, and both are necessary in the commercial environment. But, make no mistake, human judgement remains essential in understanding what the data truly means.

The future of cybersecurity is not about choosing between AI and human expertise. It is about finding the right balance between the two.
