TU Dublin Cybersecurity Work Placement Opportunities

Invitation to Industry Partners

TU Dublin’s School of Informatics and Cybersecurity is inviting Cyber Ireland member companies to express interest in hosting Year 3 students from TU863 and TU758, the Level 7 and Level 8 BSc in Applied Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics programmes.

Student Profile and Readiness

Students enter placement with a strong applied cybersecurity foundation, having completed approximately 90 ECTS credits in cybersecurity, digital forensics and security-related learning. One ECTS credit typically represents 20-25 hours of learner effort.

They also have a solid grounding in core computing, with theory and practical skills in networking, programming, systems architecture, operating systems and databases. This combination prepares them for entry-level cybersecurity roles and further study and enables them to contribute to cybersecurity projects using established tools, techniques and frameworks in a professional environment.

Cybersecurity Module Overview

The figure below details their cybersecurity modules; the full programme schedule can be seen here

Placement Model

The placement is a 20-credit Year 3 Semester 2 module (Jan – May), structured as a four-day-per-week industry placement. Placement allocation is a competitive process: students apply for available opportunities and are interviewed and selected by participating companies. Placements should be paid, with students receiving at least the applicable minimum wage. The official placement requirement is three months, but students may remain with the company until the start of September (6 months), where both the student and company agree.

Example Placement Activities

Students may be suitable for activities such as security operations support, vulnerability management, threat research, digital forensics, incident response support, governance/risk/compliance, scripting and automation, secure infrastructure support, documentation, reporting and process improvement.

Ways to Engage

  1. Host a Work Placement Student

We are seeking expressions of interest from Cyber Ireland member companies that may be willing to host one or more students.

  1. Mentor an Industry Project Student

As an alternative to placement, students may complete a 20-credit industry project. These projects are specified by, or mentored by, industry professionals and allow students to work on a real-world cybersecurity challenge while remaining within the academic project structure.

Companies can propose a project idea, provide a problem statement or dataset where appropriate, and offer light-touch mentoring or feedback during the project.

  1. Deliver an Industry Seminar

Companies can also engage by delivering an industry seminar to project students. This is a lower-commitment way to share current industry challenges, tools, case studies, career pathways or emerging trends with students during their project.

Submit an Expression of Interest

If you are interested and want to discuss further, please complete the expression of interest [form] and we will be in touch. There is no commitment at this stage.
