Cyber Futures Cyber Security Academy 2022

Cyber Security Academy

In June, over 60 students participated in the online Cyber Security Academy run by Cyber Skills team, with Industry support co-ordinated through Cyber Ireland.

The students learned about the principles of Cyber Security, Ethical Hacking and Cryptography with lectures by Dr. George O’Mahony and Dr. Hazel Murray. They were also the first students in their age group to try out exercises the Cyber Range. Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board sponsored the Prizes for the Capture-the-Flag competition on the final day, where students brought their skills together to complete challenges on the Cyber Range.

They heard about cyber careers with video content from Cyber Ireland members on the cyberfutures.ie website and guest speakers from TikTok. As well as learning about technical cyber security skills they were challenged to create a 2-minute video to answer the question ’Who benefits from cybersecurity?’ in a competition run by Trend Micro. Women of FIRST have also arranged a special careers session at the upcoming FIRSTCON in Dublin later this month for some lucky competition winners. The students have asked some very insightful and relevant questions about cyber security throughout the week, and this cohort have a bright future as potential ‘heroes’ in cyber.
